Day 231

Most of the brown scars have not pretty much vanished. Once or two very faint ones left. Quite a few little craters but can't really see them on the face. One larger crater on cheek but thats ok, got used to it now. Have stopped applying the Mederma and Bio-Oil everyday. Just put them on now and then. Few brown scars on body particularly around the waist, they will remain.

I work with Mederma and saw your blog regarding your usage of our product. I wanted to make sure you are aware that you achieve the best results when you use it as directed which is as follows: gently massage Mederma® into the scar three or four times per day for eight weeks on new scars and three to six months on existing scars. We also have a new product which contains SPF30, Mederma Cream +SPF30, because the sun can cause discoloration of scars as well. You can visit our website at www.mederma.com for more information and also discount coupons you can use. I hope that you will try Mederma, as directed, so that you can achieve the best results. Best wishes, Patti

I am grateful that I have found this blog, it has helped me gain perspective the last few days. I'm a thirty year-old male and started to suffer a 104 temp on Monday, by Wednesday morning I was in the emergency room with chicken pox, dehydration and slight pnemonia. Since then, I have been going through the worst nightmare. Today, I finally understand that I am going to make it through this and be alright. I look terrible, but I'm finally feeling on the mend.

Thank you for the diary. I, too, thought I was sitting at the computer for too long...working day and night on a couple of big projects. Rash appeared...I thought bed bugs as I had recently returned from Mexico. Finally figured out it was chicken pox and have had a course very similar to yours except for your more responsive medical care. I am in the US and needed my doctor the day before our Thanksgiving holiday. Not available but was told if I thought I was going to die go to the Emergency Department of the closest hospital. I didn't feel I was going to die, but did feel very abandoned by the medical system. Too bad, as antivirals given in the first 24-48 hours after rash onset just may be helpful. Don't get sick in the US the day before a holiday weekend.

Your diary has been so helpful. Again, thank you.

47 year old man in the UK here. Think I'm on Day 3 (when do you start counting?) so have some fun to look forward to according to the blog. It was really useful and helpful reading it though. Thanks for posting. P.S. Posting this as I watch the inauguration so being off work sick has some advantages!

GAH.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS. *hugs*

It's my third day, I think, and my %$&^%* scalp is driving me crazy. It really hurts/stings like crazy every time a hair near it moves, which is like, more frequent than every second. ;____;

At first I thought it was abnormal that my scalp itched so much, so I was really worried. After reading the contents of your blog though, it seems like I have the same symptoms sans the fever.

Does calamine lotion really help? Imma try that out, thanks. :D

I also would like to see some pictures.

on the side note, do you truly believe that Mederma and bio-oil helped your chicken pox heal?

Thanks for your blog. It got me through one of the worst weeks of my life. I'm a 46 year old male at day 6. Things are starting to heal. Getting here was an ordeal. I'm still grotesque but on the mend.

It was a help to read of someone else going through this.

Greetings.

Thank you so much for this. It really helps to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I am a 24 year old male and I am on day 2, most of the little pocks are starting to water up but my face is in a terrible condition. I honestly don't want to look myself in the mirror, it saddens me.

Good luck to everyone living through this ordeal.

19 year old girl on day 3 here... Tkank you so much for this blog. It is very helpful to know that you will get through it all... I went to the emergency room the same day, the doctor confirmed my self-diagnosis, prescribed anti-histamines but nothing else... So more time passes, more I itch... Scalp is the worst for me too. So yesterday before I went to bed I had fever just over 38°C... Took parecetamol, and after a few hours of sleep went to the bathroom. Then, on my way back to bed, I suddenly started to feel very dizzy and lost part of my hearing and vision... Then I collapsed on the floor and even lost consciousness for a few seconds. Was worried that it might be encephalitis, so I went back to the ER immediately. Turns out my syncope was caused by sudden low blood pressure and possibly dehydration... So to all fellow chickenpox sufferers: DRINK!!! DRINK LIKE YOU ARE MAD!!! I thought I drank enough, but I was apparently wrong. Well, live and learn. (Don't overdo it though.) Also, when getting out of bed, roll on your side first and stay there for a few minutes, then sit on the edge for 5 minutes... It is supposed to help prevent a collapse/syncope.

Anyway, best of luck to you all!

Age 35 - Female - 33 days after the blisters started. My face is left with marks and craters. Not sure if it will get any better. I scratched the first blister with apricot scrub even before I knew it was chicken pox. It is right on the middle of the cheek. It is still pretty deep. I also had a bacterial infection in one spot and am expecting it to scar. I am using a natural scar therapy that I got from whole foods. I still don't see my face getting any better. But your diary gives me a lot of hope. Hanging in there. A friend of mine used "modern friction" from origins and her face is so clear now in 4 weeks since she started using it (60 days after the blisters started). I am going to buy the product today. I will keep you all posted if it works.

36 year old male here-
I can't even begin to tell you how invaluable your blog has been.

On day 4 I was sent to the ER, lost 80% of my hearing from the boils. Had boils in my nose, ears, mouth, throat, scalp and face. Not too many on my torso. And my boils never itched, they burned like fire. I was out of work for nearly 4 weeks until an ENT was able to get most of my hearing back through a very painful process.
I'm on day 36 and still have dark red spots and craters on my face. Around 70-80% of the spots on my body have gone away but they seem to be taking much longer on my face to clear.
I've been using Bio-Oil for about a week twice a day, Vitamin E oil once a day, and honey once a day for about an hour since it's pretty sticky. I'll be starting rubbing freshly cut lemon soon as I'm told that helps naturally fade them. We'll see...
If these remedies don't work by next week I'm seeing a dermatologist for a laser consultation.

Modern Fusion from Origins is doing the magic. If you live in USA, you can buy it from any origins shop. It is all natural serum. It is only 4 days since I started using it and people are mentioning that the marks are fading quickly. I see significant difference every day. I will post back again in a week of how it looks then. Today is day 45 after my first blister. I wish I found this product earlier. At least it'll be helpful to others.

HI all. I also had chicken pox last month and I'm on my fourth week. So far topical creams had helped shallow my scars.. but not really remove them.

But now I think the best solution is diamond peel (as suggested by a friend who had chickenpox before me)

and after her 3 sessions, you can barely see the marks.

I just had my first session..

Im excited for the turn out after my third session.

you can check this suggestions on treating chicken pox scars

23 year old female - Thanks for posting so much and everyone else sharing their stories and concerns. I cried a few times this week. I feel physically well after a week and everything is starting to scab now. But man, my face. I thought I had bad skin before because some little pimples now and then. I definitely took that for granted. I'm applying vitamin e oil and will try the mederma, bio oil, honey in the meantime. Not looking forward to my unscabbed face but there are options for people with pockmarks thank god!!

This diary is so valuable for many reasons, including:

1. It provides the reassurance of a map through unfamiliar and somewhat frightening territory.
2. Given that the blogger's experience is typical of those suffering from chickenpox, it provides a standard that can alert a patient if his own symptoms are truly extraordinary and therefore justify particular attention by medical professionals.
3. With respect to the cosmetic effects of the disease, it encourages faith that the emotionally debilitating facial lesions will pass, either completely or practically completely.
4. It provides a venue for suggestion of strategies to minimize scarring.

So, thank you for it.

Day 22

Well, over the course of the last few weeks since I last posted all the scabs on my body have fallen off. No marks left from the ones from the body just faint pink ones for some spots. However, when the scabs fell of face, they were pink first now gone brown, so have all these brown blemishes over face. Dr says they should fade but will take a very long time! He said immediate solution could be laser treatment, but will wait and see. Shaved the beard off few days ago which is great but reveals more brown spots so growing stubble back. Been rubbing BioOil at night, and Dr suggested I use Mederma few times a day [Please seek your own medical advice]. One lymph node still a little swollen, Dr said it will probably stay like that but to keep an eye on it. Still had a few scabs on scalp, almost all gone.

Day 3

Woke up in the night feeling hot and sweaty. By morning one or two pale red spots on face, and a watery boil on arm. Decided to go and see my GP. He immediately confirmed chicken pox. He told me to just ride it through since he couldn't prescribe anything for it. He suggested baths with bicarbonate soda added, paracetamol four times a day, Calamine lotion to rub on the pox and an anti-histamine to reduce the itchiness. [Remember, you must seek your own medical advice!]. By afternoon many more red marks and water boils appearing all over scalp, face, neck, arms, chest and back. Took a bath in warm water with two table spoons bicarbonate soda added. Didn't seem to do too much. Continued with paracetamol, last one was at 16h00. Went to bed at 11h00 not feeling to bad except for obvious itching (have not taken the anti-histamine yet). Couldn't sleep, was just getting comfortable.
